Ukraine has put a case against the Majlis clampdown in Crimea

A criminal proceeding against the Russian authorities attempt to clamp down the Crimean Tatar people Majlis has been initiated in Ukraine.

The criminal case is registered by the Directorate General of the National Police Department in Crimea and Sevastopol for the citizen equality on account of ethnic descent, nationality or religious beliefs violations.

“While monitoring the Internet, there has been revealed numerous publications about attempts to clamp down the Crimean Tatar people Mejlis activity. The so-called “prosecutor of Crimea” Natalia Poklonskaya filed a lawsuit to ban the activity of the Mejlis for its allegedly extremist activities and illegally decided to cease activities of this public organization on April 12, 2016,” said the Prosecutor’s Office of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea as part of the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine.

According to the Office, such actions show that “the occupation authorities persecute consistently the representatives of the Crimean Tatar people — the citizens of Ukraine, who oppose the annexation and are ready to assert their rights for freedom and ethnic identity.”
