Ark Thrift Shop

For those who love a good treasure hunt, look no further than Ark Thrift Shop. A hotbed for DIY projects, the shop contains a giant selection of furniture—from bed frames, to tables, couches and lamps—shelves upon shelves of dishware, glassware, as well as used clothing, shoes, books and other accessories. The shop welcomes donations (and offers pickup services for furniture), with proceeds benefitting Chicagoland's Jewish community.

Belmont Army Surplus

These days the 35-plus-year-old store is more trendy-garb surplus than army surplus. The sprawling two-story shop purveys studded skateboards, party dresses, hoodies and backpacks, but the hidden secret is the extensive thrift and vintage section on the top floor.

The Brown Elephant

While the Brown Elephant can be considered a Chicago mini-chain of thrift stores, the flagship location in Lakeview is in a league of its own, with a unique selection of high quality items–from everyday essentials to genuine luxury goods. You'll find antique, vintage and contemporary furniture, clothing and accessories, housewares and even electronics in a setting so clean and minimal, it's more of a second-hand showroom than a thrift shop. New items arrive in the store daily, with much of its selection available on eBay. Proceeds go toward the Howard Brown Health Center and programs benefitting the LGBTQ communities. Donations are always welcome.

Encore Resale Clothing

Originally the product of a high school community service project, this Hyde Park shop has become a popular hot spot for savvy shoppers and thrifters alike. What it lacks in size, it makes up for in a finely curated selection of seasonal, gently used, name-brand clothing, shoes and accessories for men, women and children, from stores like Forever21, J.Crew, Banana Republic and Brooks Brothers. The shop also accepts clothing donations. What it doesn't opt to put on the sales floor is donated to local soup kitchens and the Salvation Army.

Green Element Resale

Packed to the brim with thrifted and vintage finds, this Edgewater shop demands plenty of time to sift through its goods for one-of-a-kind gems like furniture, housewares, books and plenty of off-the-beaten-path knick-knacks. The shop accepts donations, and pickup and delivery can also be arranged.

Mt. Sinai Hospital Resale Shop

For 34 years, this Lincoln Park shop has been a destination for those in search of thrifty furniture, clothing and housewares. Be sure to check out the designer room for gently used designer scores from labels like YSL Prada, and Kate Spade. With 100% of the proceeds going to Mt. Sinai, the thrift shop proceeds are currently helping to build a new emergency waiting room for the hospital. Volunteers and donations are always welcomed.

Thrift & Thrive

When Melissa and Joseph Basilone moved to Portage Park in 2007 in the midst of the economic crisis, they knew the neighborhood needed a budget-friendly shop where residents could purchase gently used housewares, clothing, furniture, toys and more, at prices everyone could afford. Years later, the immaculate, organized storefront draws Chicagoans from all over who are hunting for a bargain.
