Statement by Governor John Kasich on the Continued Detention of Nadiya Savchenko

I join the Administration is expressing my deep concern about the health and welfare of Ukrainian pilot and Rada Deputy Nadiya Savchenko, who since Friday has refused food and water to protest her continued detention by the Russian Federation.

In the 20 months since she was captured in eastern Ukraine and taken to Russia, Ms. Savchenko has reportedly endured interrogations, solitary confinement, and forced “psychiatric evaluation.” Her show trial and continuing imprisonment demonstrate disregard for international law.

I call upon Russia to immediately release Ms. Savchenko and return her to Ukraine.
