Dismaland Calais: Banksy is turning park into refugee shelter

Dismaland Calais: Banksy is turning park into refugee shelter

All of the timber and fixtures from Banksy's Dismaland — the street artist's bemusement park in the seaside town of Weston-super-Mare — will be sent to refugees in Calais.

In an announcement on the Dismaland website, the artist said the materials would be used at the camp to build shelters. The Jungle, located near the Port of Calais in Northern France, is home to some 3,500 refugees.

"Coming soon… Dismaland Calais," the artist says on the park's website. "All the timber and fixtures from Dismaland are being sent to the ‘jungle’ refugee camp near Calais to build shelters. No online tickets will be available."

The refugee crisis was one of many uncomfortable topics addressed by Dismaland — with one installation in particular focused on it.

On the closing evening of the park, Pussy Riot performed the song "Refugee" as part of their set, which leveled criticism at how European governments are handling the current crisis.

The park, which closed Sunday after five weeks drew crowds of more than 150,000. Tourism body Visit Somerset says the exhibition brought £20 million ($30 million) to the faded seaside town of Weston-super-Mare.
